As a business owner, you likely have 1000 things to get done at any one time, all fighting for your attention and taking up little pieces of your concentration. Of course, this is not the best situation for your business because it leads you to spread yourself too thin and as Ron Swanson once said: “Never half-ass two things. Whole ass one thing.”
Your business is your masterpiece, so of course you worry about every part of it all the time. It’s likely you have a mountain of tasks fighting for your attention; tasks like job scheduling, bookkeeping, resource management, debt collecting, growth planning, and the list could go on. It is important that in these moments, a business owner can acknowledge these areas which need attention but delegate the efforts to reliable and capable team members who can get the job done properly. If you do this well, you will have so much more time to focus on the areas of the business where your strengths lie.
What we typically recommend is that the business owner focuses on the top level things like planning for larger scale investments or seeking those bigger clients. Other day-to-day tasks such as bookkeeping, job scheduling and debt collecting are those tasks that help your business function and take up a lot of time but don’t really encourage growth in the bigger picture. What’s more, these kinds of jobs are the jobs people generally take home after a long day on the job, so they are sucking away your family time. It is important that you can delegate these kinds of tasks away to give you the time you need to grow your business and live your life. Just make sure you don’t distance yourself too far from the clients because building relationships is still important.
